Holiday Spruce 12″ Square, Free Crochet Pattern + Video

The Holiday Spruce 12 ” Square is a gorgeously textured square that can be made in fun seasonal colors.  Incorporating such stitches as post stitches, puff stitches, basic stitches, and more, the result is an engaging project with tons of texture and interest.  If desired you can make a bunch of these and stitch them together to make a very special blanket!

Materials:

  • J (6.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Red Heart With Love (one of the squares I used the colors Berry Red, Aran, Tan, and Mallard and for the other square pictured I used Berry Red, Aran, Tan, and Sage) Note: I used less that 1/4 of each color from each skein for each square.
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape Measure

Sizing:

  • 12 inches wide
  • 12 inches tall

Instructions:

Colors used in example are shown in the parenthesis of each round. “Green” refers to both the teal in the one square and the sage shown in the other square. Placement of both colors is the same.

Round 1 (red): Ch 4 Join

Round 2 (red): Ch 3 15 dc

Round 3 (buff): Tie new color into back loop of any stitch, Work a (bpdc, ch 1) in each st. Join to close round with a slip stitch.

Round 4 (green): Tie new color into back loop of any stitch, Work a (fpdc, ch 1) in each st. Join to close round with a slip stitch.

Round 5 (Aran): Tie new color into back loop of any stitch, Work a (bpdc, ch 1) in each st. Join to close round with a slip stitch.

Round 6 (red): Tie new color into any ch 1 space and ch 3. Work (3 dc, ch 1) in the same space. *Work a sl st into the next space, then 4 dc in the next space. Repeat around and join to close round with a sl st.

Round 7 (buff): Tie new color into any ch 1 space from round 5 incorporating both spaces from round 5 and 6 and then ch 3. Work (5 dc, ch 2) in the same space. *Work (6 dc, ch 2) into ch 1 space. Repeat around and join to close round with a sl st.

Round 8 (green): Tie new color into any ch 2 space and ch 3. Work (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same space. *Work a bpdc into next 6 stitches, then ch 2. Work a bpdc into next 6 stitches, then (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch 2 space. Repeat from * to end of round. Join to close round with a slip stitch.

**The next round incorporates a puff stitch. To make a puff stitch, wrap yarn around hook, insert hook and bring up a loop (3 loops on the hook),wrap yarn around hook, insert hook and bring up a loop (5 loops on the hook), wrap yarn around hook, insert hook and bring up a loop (7 loops on

the hook), wrap yarn around hook one last time and bring it through all 7 loops.

Round 9 (aran): Tie new color into any ch 1 space (corner space) from previous round and ch 3. Work (2 dc, ch 1, ch 3). *Ch 1 then work a puff stitch (see note above for instructions for this stitch) in the first area after the corner stitches from the previous round. Skip two stitches then work a puff stitch in the area after. Skip two more stitches then work a puff stitch in the area after. Work a puff stitch in the ch 2 space. Skip two more stitches then work a puff stitch in the area after. Skip two more stitches then work a puff stitch in the area after. Skip two more stitches then work a puff stitch in the area after. Ch 1 then work (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) Repeat from * to end of round. Join with a slip stitch to close round.

Note:  Here’s a close up of those puff stitches, also be sure to check out the video if you need to see it step by step!

Round 10 (red): Tie new color into any corner space and ch 3. Work (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the same space. *Ch 1 then work a sc into the top stitch of the first puff stitch. Work a dc/spike stitch in between the two double crochets from two rows prior. Repeat across to the next corner space, then ch 1. Work 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in the corner space (ch 1 space). Repeat from * around. Join with a slip stitch to close round.

Round 11 (buff): Tie new color into any corner space and ch 3. Work (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the same space. *Work 2 tr in the ch 1 space (in between the corner stitches and the first side stitch). Work a tr in each stitch across and 2 tr in the ch 1 space right before you get to the corner. Work (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the ch 1 space. Repeat from * around. Join to close round with a sl st.

Round 12 (green): Tie new color into any corner space and ch 3. Work (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the same space. Ch 1, then work a bpdc in each st across. Work (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the ch 1 space. Repeat from * around. Join to close round with a sl st.

Round 13 (Aran): Repeat round 12.

Round 14 (red): Tie new color into any corner space and ch 3. Work (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the same space. *Work 2 dc in the ch 1 space (in between the corner stitches and the first side stitch). Work a tr in each stitch across and 2 tr in the ch 1 space right before you get to the corner. Work (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the ch 1 space. Repeat from * around. Join to close round with a sl st. 

Round 15 (buff): Tie new color into any corner space and ch 1. Work 3 sc in the same space. *Work a sc in each stitch across, then 3 sc in the corner space.  Repeat from * around.  Join to close round with a sl st.

  1. Love this!!!
    I think that row 2 should read: Ch3, 15 dc in ring.
    Also I noticed an error (?) in row 9… instead of reading "Work (2 dc, ch 1, ch 3)" should it read "Work (2 dc, ch1, 3 dc)" ?
