Instructions:

*Note: To make a puff stitch, wrap yarn around hook and draw up a loop (3 loops on your hook), wrap yarn around hook and draw up another loop (5 loops on your hook), wrap yarn around hook and draw up a loop (7 loops on your hook), wrap yarn around hook and draw up a loop (9 loops on your hook) Wrap yarn around hook one more time and bring it through all 9 loops on your hook.

Part 1-The Puff Stitch Squares

(Make 9, I made 4 blue and 5 red to create a pattern with the colors)

Ch 6, then join with a slip stitch in the furthest ch from the hook to create a ring.

Round 1: Work (puff, ch 3) four times into the center of the ring. Join with a slip stitch into the first chain worked (top of that first puff stitch) to close the round.

Round 2: Slip stitch over to the first ch 3 space, and work a sl st into the space. Then in the same space *work (puff, ch 3, puff, ch 3). Rpt from * around in each ch 3 space. Join with a slip stitch into the first chain worked (top of that first puff stitch) to close the round.

Round 3: Slip stitch over to the first ch 3 space, and work a sl st into the space. *Work a (puff, ch 3, puff, ch 3) into the corner (ch 3 space), then a (puff, ch 3) into the square’s side space. Rpt from * around. Join with a slip stitch into the first chain worked (top of that first puff stitch) to close the round.

**The next section we will be using the join as you go technique to connect all of the motifs together. The first motif will be worked independently. Motifs 2-9 are worked using the JAYGO technique to join them all together.

Part 2-Joining the squares together

Motif 1 only: This round worked independently, nothing joined to this one yet. Tie a new color into any corner space, then ch 2. Work (2 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc) into the same space. This creates the first corner of the square. *Work (3 hdc, ch 1) in the next space, then (3hdc, ch 1) into the next space. (this will create the side of the square). Next, work (3 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc) into the corner space. Repeat from * around, then join to close the round with a slip stitch.

Motif 2: Joined using the JAYGO (join as you go technique): Grab a second square (following the color sequence/patterning for your squares and tie on the JAYGO color into any corner space and ch 2. Work (2 hdc, ch 2, 3 hdc) into the same space. This creates the first corner of the square. *Work (3 hdc, ch 1) in the next space, then (3hdc, ch 1) into the next space. (this will create the side of the square). Now we’re ready to join. Start by working (3 hdc, then ch 1, then slip stitch join into the corner space of the first square to join them together. Ch 1, then work 3 hdc to finish the corner. Work 3 hdc, slip stitch join, 3 hdc, slip stitch join to complete the side joins. For the last corner join, (work 3 hdc, ch 1, slip stitch join into the other square, ch 1, 3 hdc). The two squares are now joined side by side. Work the rest of the square the way you normally would (see steps for motif 1) then join with a slip stitch to close the round, fasten off yarn and you’re ready to join another square!

Motifs 3 through 9: Joined using the JAYGO (join as you go technique): As you join the rest of your squares, you’ll basically be repeating the instructions for motif 2 (see above), except the only difference being that sometimes there will be an area where you’ll be joining into a corner that has two or three squares (instead of simply joining into another square). In this case make you slip stitch join in the spaces between the squares (not the corner space). Always go directly across in your join to avoid it being off center. To see this join in action in greater detail, be sure to check out the video. In the video, I join two squares together, then three, then four squares, showing all possible joining scenarios that may arise as you work on your square.

*Important: If you have never tried the JAYGO technique, I highly recommend the video.

Part 3: Edging Round

Tie new yarn into any corner space and ch 1. Work 3 sc into the same space. Work a sc into each stitch and space across. When you get to the spots where you joined squares together, just work a sc into each of the squares corner spaces. For each corner, work 4 sc into the corner space. Join to close the round with a slip stitch.

Finishing:

Weave in the ends and you’re done! Join many together for a lovely blanket or even stitch one up in cotton yarn for a pretty dishcloth too!
