I like to travel lightly. While that is not always possible and dealing with a giant tote and hands full are unavoidable sometimes, ideally I like to just grab a small purse and go. I have been really loving my cross-body style lately, it’s kind of like a messenger bag, but smaller like a purse. That way I can be totally hands free (to fill them up with other things of course).

I designed this little pouch to carry the bare necessities…phone, keys, perhaps a bit of cash or card. Think of it like a hands-free clutch or an extra (and pretty) pocket. If you’ve ever had to wander around an airport, you might find this useful too for a passport, tickets, etc.

Made with solid granny squares in beautiful sock yarn and topped off with a ruffly strap, this little purse pouch is extremely useful.

Ruffle Travel Pouch

By Jennifer Dickerson

Materials:

Sizing:

Instructions for front and back of travel pouch:

The pouch is the same front and back, each side having one large square and two smaller squares.

Click here for a photo tutorial on how to make this square stitch by stitch…

Larger square (Make 2):

Ch 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

Round 2: Sl st over to the first chain space, ch 5, then work two dc into the center of the ring. Work a dc in each of the next three stitches. To work the corner, work two dc, ch two, then two more dc in the ch 2 space from the previous round. Work the next side the same way, working a dc in the next three stitches, then work the next corner by working 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc all in the same space. Keep working in this manner all the way around the square. At the corner where the round began, work one more dc in the corner space, Join with a sl st to close.

Round 4: Sl st to the first corner and then ch 5, and work 2 dc in the same space. Work a dc in each stitch across the top (there will be eleven this time), Work the corner the same way as the previous round (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) and keep going in this manner all the way around, working the corners and sides as before. When reaching the last corner, work one more dc, join with a slip stitch to close.

Fasten off and weave in any ends.

Small square (Make 4):

Ch 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

Round 1: Chain 5, then work 3 dc into the center of the ring, then ch 2. Work the (3 dc, ch 2) two more times into the center of the ring. Work 2 more dc into the center of the ring, and join with a sl st to close.

Fasten off and weave in any ends.

Two things to note:

*If you’d like a larger pouch, work more rounds of the squares. To work more rounds, you’ll work the corners the same way in each round, and work the sides by working a dc in each stitch.

*Don’t forget to work the corners of the square in the spaces, and the sides of the square in the stitches.

Instructions for strap:

Make a chain as long as you’d like for your strap to be. Be sure to account for any extra stretch of the strap when measuring. In the second ch from the hook, work one sc. Work a sc in each ch until the end. Ch 1 and turn. Work a sc in the first st and in each st across Ch 2 and turn. Work a sc in the first st, skip the next stitch. In the next stitch, work (sc, ch 2, sc) all in the same stitch. *Work a slip stitch in the next stitch, skip the next stitch, then work (sc, ch 2, sc) in the next stitch. Repeat from the * until you reach the end of the strap. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Assembly & Finishing:
