Craft How to Work The Knit Stitch September 11, 2012August 13, 2023 Jennifer The knit stitch is where it all begins. Once you’ve mastered it, the sky’s the limit! Many other stitches in knitting are based off of this simple stitch. When you knit, you’ll work from left to right, moving each stitch from your left needle to your right needle. Let’s begin…after you’ve cast on, slip your right needle into the loop that’s on the left hand needle as shown below, Wrap the yarn around the back (right hand) needle, Now carefully slide the back (right hand) needle up under the left hand needle along with the loop, and bring that loop you’ve just made with the yarn from the back to the front with the right hand needle. It should look something like this: Now push the loop you’ve just knitted off of the tip of the left hand needle. You’ve just knitted a stitch! Keep going and keep practicing, when I was learning, it felt a little wobbly, but the more I kept doing it, my stitches became more uniform and I gained some speed too. In fact, my whole first year of knitting, I just made only garter stitch scarves, that was a lot of knit stitches!
